Ski and Snowboard Terms

 

Explanatory note on terms:

The following terms are the most commonly used terms in the sport of “skiing and snowboarding”.

Unfortunately, since many of the term names do not have Turkish equivalents, many of the Turkish names mentioned next to their English names have been tried to be defined imaginatively according to our experience.

I wish that the Asian and Anatolian regions, which were the pioneers in the historical origin of skiing, had given more importance to this sport, and that the terms of this sport had been named with Turkish words.

Alpine Skiing / Alpine Skiing: A term describing vertical skiing down a slope. It takes place on long, steep trails where the average speed of the Olympians is between 75 and 95 mph. Technical events include slalom and giant slalom.

All Mountain Skis/All Mountain Skis : A type of ski designed to perform well in all mountain and snow conditions.

Altitude Sickness / Mountain Sickness: A general term for health problems that occur at high altitudes and in low oxygen environments. Symptoms include dizziness, fatigue, headache, loss of appetite, shortness of breath and, in more severe cases, confusion, coughing and loss of coordination. To prevent altitude sickness, drink plenty of fluids, especially when returning from low altitude, and avoid drinking alcohol for 24 to 48 hours in advance.

Avalanche (White Dragon) : An extremely dangerous mass of snow, ice and rock. An avalanche, caused by the disturbance of an unstable natural layer, can travel down a slope at 80 MPH and can be triggered by explosives accidentally thrown or thrown by careless skiers and snowboarders in the backcountry, or intentionally thrown or thrown by ski patrol(almost impossible to happen on Mount Erciyes).

Backcountry / Off-Boundary : Any area outside the patrolled boundaries of an established ski resort. Also referred to as “out of bounds”.

Backseat/Sliding:Leaning back too much while skiing.

Base :The base of the mountain. Usually the area where restaurants, bars, chairlift ticket offices, rental houses and in some cases accommodation are located.

Binding / Binding : It is the name of the mechanism that is attached to the ski boot and fixed to the ski center point. It holds the toe and heel of the boot and can be adjusted to release automatically in the event of a fall. To remove your boot, the “tail” or heel must be pressed with a baton

Bluebird /Ski weather: The general name for the perfect weather conditions for skiing. Snow during the night, blue skies and sun in the morning.

Bowl Skiing /Ski Bowl :Terrain that looks like a giant bowl in which you can ski or ride a bike.

Bumps / Moguls / Otag: Bumps, artificial hills.

Bunny Hill : Gentle slopes for beginners and warm-ups.

Camber/Ski camber : The flexible cambered part of the ski between the tip and tail when placed on a flat surface.

Carve / Carved Turn: Pressing the edge of your ski or skis to make a turn towards the mountain.

Cats / Cat: Tracked vehicles used to clear snow overnight at ski resorts.

Cat Skiing / Cat Skiing: A type of skiing in a mountainous area accessed by taking a snowmobile up the mountain, usually accompanied by a guide.

Cat Track / Cat Trail : Trails used by some skiers/snowboarders to go around the mountain (not recommended)

Chowder/ Lumpy Snow: Slushy snow that is not very pleasant to walk on.

Chatter / Shivering : Shaking and bouncing of the skis on hard and icy snow during descent.

Corn Snow / Bulgur Snow : Snow texture resembling corn kernels caused by melting during the dayand freezing at night.

Corduroy / Sheet :Freshly cleaned snow cover, perfect for making wide and fast turns

Cork / TwistingSimultaneous rotation and twisting while skiing or snowboarding.

Crud / CragUngroomed and unsuitable snow for skiing

Crus / Crusted Snow: The layer of frozen snow just above the soft snow

Double Black Diamond /Black Line : The most difficult track in terms of difficulty

Downloading / Nasrettin : Riding a chairlift in the opposite direction. It is usually seen as an amateur move unless you are accompanied by the ski patrol.

Dust on Crust /Perforated Snow: Snow cover formed by new powdery snow falling on top of frozen snow.

Edges : The bottom inner and outer sharp edges of the skis.

Edgie Wedgie :A simple device with rubber clips on both ends, often used to help small skiers hold their skis together.

Elevation : The height of a mountain or elevation measured above sea level.

Fall Line: Steep vertical line of slopes

Fat Skis :A type of ski with a wide base designed for deep snow

First Chair /Second: The name given to the first group to ascend the mountain at the beginning of the day.

Flex / Flexibility : Unit of flexibility value of ski boots.

Free-Carving/Aerial Turn: The technique of making sharp turns at high speed using a sharp-edged ski

Sidecut / Ski Cut : The difference between the width of the tip and tail of the skis and the width of the middle waist

Flat Light / Foggy Vision:The technical term for poor visibility. Usually when it is overcast or snowing, there is little or no contrast between the overcast sky and the snow cover.

Freeride /free Skiing :This is the name of the category used in skiing and snowboarding. It emphasizes high speeds, carved turns and continuity on steep terrain.

Freestyle : It is the name given to the category of snowboarding and skiing that is more competition-oriented and includes acrobatic stunts.

Glade Skiing/Forest Skiing: Skiing in wooded terrain.

Groomers /Snow Bed : The compacted snowy surface remaining after the surface snow cover has been removed by the snowplow.

Heelside/Under the heel:The part that comes under the heels when you are on a snowboard

Heli-Skiing / Heli-skiing : Skiing in a mountainous area accessed by helicopter

Magic Carpet (magic carpet):A moving floor platform, mostlyconfigured to take new skiers to the slopes with less slopes.

Mashed Patotoes /Mushy snow: Pureed snow cover

Off-Piste / Off-piste : Skiing on any snowy terrain outside the marked piste runs.

Parallel Skiing/Parallel Skiing : A style of skiing in which the skis are shoulder-width parallel to each other when sliding down a slope.

Pipe / Halfpipe / Tubular Obstacle: A purlin made of snow in the shape of a U pipe for performing acrobatic stunts in the air.

Pizza Pie /pizza slice :It is the technique of slowing down or stopping by bringing the front part of the skis into a “V” shape for beginners.

Powder snow : Fresh powdery snow that tends to be dry and light (such as a plum snow cover).

Ripper/Dustbuster: An experienced skier who can ski parallel, straight and backwards in all conditions.

Rocker/ Cradle Ski :A type of ski with upturned tips, almostlike the legs of a rocking chair or cradle. It provides ease in turns and bumps.

Shredder/Whipper: A snowboarder who can perform show-oriented movements such as jumping, flipping, etc. on all kinds of slopes with enthusiasm and ease.

Skinning /Sleeved Ski : Climbing with skis thanks to special tapes that are glued to the base of the ski and prevent slipping…

Slush : Melted snow and snow base

Splitboard /Piece snowboard : A two-piece snowboard with a special base designed to be joined together while sliding.

Summit / Extreme Peak :The highest point accessible by chairlift in ski resorts.

Stance Goofy/Right: The sliding position on a snowboard with the right foot in front

Stance Regular/Left:The sliding position on a snowboard with the left foot in front

Sidewall / Ski structure : The material that makes up the entire structure of the ski

Stem Christie : A sudden stop in parallel, starting with the pushing out of the ski tails.

Straps / Carrying clip :Nylon carrier that holds the skis together and makes transportation easier.

Stomp / Full finish :Performing a jump or trick perfectly and ending it by stepping on the ground smoothly without disturbing the balance

Steep and Deep : This is the name given to the combination of steep ascents and deep snow.

Switch /Foot switch :Changing feet on a snowboard

T-bar / T-Bar : Portable carrier rope used by skiers to hold on while climbing the slope

Tail : Ski or Snowboard tail

Telemark Skiing /Telemark Skiing :Also known as cross-country or “Nordic” skiing. It is a skiing sport practiced on relatively flat and open terrain using narrow, flat skis.

Terrain Park / Obstacle Park : Areas made up of different obstacles for freestyle skiers and snowboarders to show off.

Toeside /Under the head : The part of the snowboard edge that comes under the fingertips while on the snowboard.

Tracked Out / Ergin ezik : A track that starts with smooth fresh snow and turns to mud after being crossed.

Traverse / Travertine :Zig zagging down the slope

Tree Well / Under Tree: The lower part of the tree where there is no snow due to the branches of the trees

Snowplow :Also known as pizza slice. For beginners, the name given to the technique of slowing down or stopping by forming the front of the skis into a “V” shape.

White Out / Zero Visibility:Poor or zero visibility caused by a snowstormor blizzard

Wipe Out /Abondene: A clumsy fall that scatters the skis

Wind Chill / Wind Cut : Freezing cold air felt by the wind.
