7 Important Rules to Consider Before Starting Skiing and Snowboarding

Things to Consider Before Skiing and Snowboarding

Skiing and snowboarding are both fun and physically rewarding. However, for a safe and efficient learning process, it is important not to skip some important preparatory steps. Here are the steps you should pay attention to in order to ski safely on ski & snowboard slopes and improve your technical skills:

1. Warm Up Before Sliding

It is very important to warm up for about 20 minutes before you start skiing or snowboarding. Warming up stretches your muscles, prepares your joints and reduces the risk of injury. You can start with light circular movements around the neck, shoulders, waist, knees and ankles, followed by leg extensions and light brisk walking exercises. This preparation will help you skate with more balance and control on the track.

2. Check the Map of Ski Slopes

Reading the map of the pistes and getting information before you start skiing is critical for your safety. The pistes have difficulty levels marked with blue, red and black colors. Blue pistes are for beginners, red pistes are for intermediates and black pistes are for advanced skiers. Decide in advance which piste you will ski on and pay attention to the warning signs on the pistes. In this way, you will protect your safety and the safety of other skiers.

3. Apply your sliding technique according to the slope of the track

The degree of slope on ski slopes directly affects the skiing technique. As the slope increases, balance and control skills become more important. When skiing, focus on learning basic movements such as stopping, slowing down, right and left turns by choosing the appropriate slope. When you start on low slope tracks, you can improve your reflexes over time and move your techniques to more challenging tracks. Remember, strengthening your basic techniques accelerates your progress.

4. Choosing the Right Track for Beginners

If you are not familiar with skiing or snowboarding techniques, stay away from steep slopes. In the beginning, it is much more beneficial to gain a sense of balance and sliding on gently sloping or flat areas. In these areas, you can safely learn basic stance, sliding position, braking and changing direction. Doing these exercises with an instructor increases your learning speed and builds your confidence.

5. Practice the Technical Exercises on Different Tracks

Don’t just stick to one track to improve your sliding techniques. You can practice balance and control on the blue pistes, turn technique on the red pistes and reflexes and speed control on the black pistes. Each type of piste gives you a different experience. By practicing regularly, you will strengthen your ski & snowboard control, improve your reflexes and adapt your body to the piste conditions.

6. Use Body Joints Correctly

When skiing and snowboarding, it is very important to use every joint of your body correctly. Your balance center is your knees and hips. Shift your weight to the center of the soles of your feet, keep your knees slightly bent and your arms open for balance. Having your body joints working in harmony makes it easier to control while sliding. As you learn these techniques, your safety will increase and your performance will improve.

7. Always Wear a Helmet

Make sure you wear your helmet before hitting the ski slopes. A helmet is the most important protection against falls and bumps. Especially for beginner skiers, this habit is vital. Make sure the helmet is the right size and fits properly. Safe equipment not only protects you, but also other athletes on the slopes.
